24 June 2020

Words from Gampaha District highest rated player Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage who received free air ticket from Gampaha District Chess Association (GDCA) for Delhi Open 2020

'I prefer to follow many world top tournaments and it was very helpful to improve as a young chess player.' - Ranindu Liyanage

Ranindu is ranked No.2 in the Active Rated Players Under 18 local list now. We will talk about Ranindu's chess life in a separate article in the future. Now we listen to one of his experiences and enjoy one of his interesting games.

Listen to Ranindu ...

'Actually Delhi tournament was one of the best tournaments which I have ever played. Because there were 37 GMs and so many titled players participated for the tournament. In the tournament, I played with 3 GMs and 3 IMs (out of my 10 games) and scored 2.5 out of those 6 games. I scored 6 points out of 10 ranked as 75th out of 353 players. And also I was able to achieve best foreign player award for my performance. Not only that I secure 11th place in the Delhi open blitz event. End of the event I was able to increase my rating by 75 ELO points.

Throughout the tournament, the quality of the games is quite high. I would like to play this kind of tournaments again and again because as a Sri Lankan player it was a great opportunity for me to play against many higher rated players especially GMs and IMs.

I prefer to follow many world top tournaments and it was very helpful to improve as a young chess player.'

Here is one of his best games, which was played in the Delhi tournament against IM Gholami Aryan (2541).
